What is known today as BankSouth is a combination of two banks - The Citizens Bank founded in Greensboro, Georgia on April 1, 1946 with $50,000 in Capital Stock, and Bank of Union Point, founded in Union Point, Georgia on May 15, 1911 with $40,000 of Capital Stock. The merger occurred on March 3, 1977, creating Citizens Union Bank. On January 26, 2004 Citizens Union Bank formally changed its corporate name to BankSouth.
Today, BankSouth operates six branch locations in Lake Oconee, downtown Greensboro, Watkinsville, Atlanta, and Savannah.
