Immanuel Lutheran Church ELCA

Immanuel Lutheran Church was founded in 1892 under the leadership of Pastor Wike. In 1894, under Pastor Lucas, the congregation erected its first church building. Pastor Lucas was suceeded by Pastor Mueller, who in turn was suceeded in 1899 by Pastor Lemke. Under Pastor Lemke, Trinity Lutheran Church of Shelton, CT was organized in 1899. Thereafter, the two churches Trinity and Immanuel consitituted one parish served by the resident Seymour Pastor. In July of 1942, the enlarged and renovated church building of Immanuel was dedicated. It is the present building on West Street, Seymour. In July 1942, the two churches, Trinity and Immanuel, seperated as Trinity was large enough to have its own pastor. Pastor Borchert stayed with Immanuel as the full time pastor. On September 1, 1964 St Paul's Lutheran Church of Ansonia officially merged with Immanuel Lutheran. On June 12, 1966, the new Parish building of Immanuel was dedicated. The three acres of land were donated by Mr & Mrs. Hubert Stoddard, and two more acres were purchased by the Ladies Aid for the parish. In January 1973, the congregation appointed a Planning Council to set plans for financing and constructing the next phase of the building program, a new sanctuary. It was determined that it would be possible to have a two floor building so phases two and three were combined and plans were drawn for a Sanctuary and Classroom building. In September of 1974 construction began on the new church building. June 15, 1975, the new structure was dedicated.
