In 1992, the birth of the State Games of Mississippi elevated the spirit of amateur athletics in Mississippi. Patterned after the Olympics, the State Games has encouraged participation for all Mississippians by creating new sport opportunities and by serving as educator and cheerleader to sports newcomers. The State Games has become Mississippi’s largest annual amateur multi-sport event. It is well grounded through strong partnerships with amateur sport associations, host communities, and organizations interested in promotion of sports. The State Games brings out the best amateur sports has to offer, including sportsmanship, teamwork and perseverance. Beyond the sports experience, participants learn about setting goals, facing hard work and dedication and understanding the diversity of others. The State Games of Mississippi is an event for all Mississippians. The State Games of Mississippi is a not-for-profit organization and is primarily funded through sponsorships and contributions. More than 500 volunteers lend a hand during the State Games helping to make the event a huge success.


The State Games of Mississippi will have sporting events on all four weekends of June 2011. Registration will open in March on the website or by calling 601-482-0205 or 800-482-0205.

The 20th Anniversary of State Games of Mississippi will include 29 sports spread over 17 counties. While 10 and 12-year-old soccer and Allstar Baseball require tryouts, all other sports are open to individuals and teams of all ages and abilities. Participants must be Mississippi residents for at least 30 days prior to the first day of competition for their sport.

The Games kick off with the annual Olympic-style Opening Ceremonies sponsored by AT&T Mississippi on Friday, June 17. The location is to be announced. The Opening Ceremonies feature entertainment, food, the Parade of Athletes, the lighting of the torch, an appearance by past and present members of the Olympic team and a grand fireworks show.

The State Games of Mississippi is one of 30 states who are members of the National Congress of State Games and is affiliated with the Olympic Committee. The Mississippi Games attract more than 5000 athletes from across the state. Gold and Silver medalist in the 2010 and 2011 State Games are eligible to compete in the State Games of America to be held in San Diego, CA in August 2011.
