The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®) is the recognized global leader in accreditation and other vital public safety support services. CALEA, a private non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, was created as an independent accrediting authority in 1979 by the four major law enforcement executive associations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives; the National Sheriffs’ Association; and the Police Executive Research Forum, which represent about 80 percent of the United States law enforcement profession. The 21-member CALEA Commission comprises a group of ethnically diverse men and women; eleven Commissioners who are public safety professionals and ten who represent the public and private sectors. Over 1,000 public safety agencies are currently enrolled in some stage of the CALEA process. Twenty-five percent of full-time state and local law enforcement officers in the United States work for agencies in the CALEA accreditation process.
