Our story began in 1985 with a one-dollar appropriation from the Vermont State Legislature. Over the past 32 years, we have grown to be a year-long nonprofit that is dedicated to teaching young people personal responsibility through meaningful work that connects us to the land, community and one another. We envision a future in which every generation is committed to their community and the land, and we bolster this vision with the core values of personal responsibility, conservation, leadership, education, job training and teamwork.
We now offer more programs to greater numbers of young people, for longer periods of time, in more places. In addition to employment, we offer credit-bearing experiences in both conservation and sustainable agriculture. Youth are hired through the VYCC and receive job-training in technical skills, environmental literacy and leadership development. Then, they are paid to complete scores of conservation and/or sustainable agriculture projects throughout Vermont and North Carolina, all while living in the outdoors and learning through structured educational programs that prepare them to become citizens and leaders.
