The Wood River police department had an honor guard procession tonight for canine officer Degen. See WR PD's Facebook page for details. Degen was euthanized by Dr. Brent Leh at approximately 7 p.m. The procession was scheduled to leave WR at 6:30. Other canine officers, handlers, family, friends, and supporters were in attendance at Hawthorne. Hawthorne pays for the cradle to grave care for seven local canine officers with the WoodRiver, Glen Carbon, and Litchfield police departments, including one retired officer. Hawthorne pays for a portion of the K9 officers' care through its nonprofit Angel Fund, which was started in February. To date, the Angel Fund has covered $8,532 in veterinary bills for the police canine units, and the support of other agencies like the Tree House Wildlife Sanctuary in Dow. Thank you for your service, Degen.

Hawthorne Animal Hospital shared Wood River Police Department's post.
After 8 years of dedicated service to both the citizens of East Alton and Wood River K9 Degen's final call will be today. He was diagnosed with aggressive cancer and will be laid to rest. Our thoughts will be with his previous handlers and his most recent our own Officer Mike Young. K9 Degen was a great asset to our department and will be missed. A police escort will take place this evening from the Wood River PD to Hawthorne Animal Hospital in Glen Carbon. The escort will be leaving the department at 6:30pm. Other police agencies that wish to participate may contact the WRPD at 618/251-3114 for further details.
