Sharing tales of her own native legends Kathy (Bolduc) Eisenschenk helps Anoka-Hennepin’s American Indian students uncover and understand their own sacred stories. Eisenschenk, an Anishinaabe Ojibwe from White Earth of the Mississippi Band Eagle Clan (doodem migiza), serves as Indian Education advisor for the district’s native American students and was recently named Outstanding American Indian Home School Liaison of the Year for the state of Minnesota. “I just use my life’s experiences to relate to native kids. I look at what they need, what they’re lacking and try to help them figure it out and get there. They are my kids, my family,” Eisenschenk said. Read more: http://bit.ly/2mZiPms

When superintendents from across the metro area launched an effort to ensure equity and excellence for all students, the idea of collecting input from stakeholders was viewed as an essential first step. A Reimagine Minnesota forum on March 9 did just that, joining citizens, staff members and students from Anoka-Hennepin, Spring Lake Park, Fridley and Columbia Heights in roundtable discussions. (See our video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9C3CxJvnZg) It is one of eight such events held this spring. Feedback generated from these sessions will help shape a report and recommendations to address integration, access, opportunity and educational achievement for all students as changes are contemplated in Minnesota schools. The event was held at the Mounds View Community Center.

We are proud of all our graduates, and we love sharing stories about them when we get a chance. ABC Newspapers has a story about Anoka High School graduate Jesse Larson, 34, who made it onto the NBC television show "The Voice." How cool is that?! Larson's blind audition for the show aired on Feb. 28. He sang John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy” and got singer Adam Levine to add him to his team. Larson will appear in an upcoming show as contestants are whittled down. Way to go, Jesse, and go Tornadoes! Read more: http://bit.ly/2mYzbvr
