The Macon County Public Library opened on Main Street, October 5, 1957, with Mrs. Anise Harris as the head librarian. Approximately 1,000 books were borrowed from the Regional Library in order to open the library - the county not owning any books of their own. In July of 1968 it was proposed to purchase property for a new library site. Church Street was chosen, and the first day of service at the new 3,200 square foot location was on Monday, March 27, 1972. In 1994, 1,646 square feet were added, and in 2012, ground broke once again to add 1,468 square feet to the existing building.
Today we house 14,872 volumes, 10 patron computers, and laptops that are available for public use.
