The Bayer Group can look back on a highly successful 2016. “We took another major strategic step forward with the agreed acquisition of Monsanto, which is aimed at further strengthening Bayer,” CEO Werner Baumann said on Friday at the Annual Shareholders’ Meeting in Bonn. “Through the transaction, we intend to create substantial additional value in the long term,” he explained. In terms of business, 2016 was another record year for Bayer, Baumann noted, adding that “both sales and adjusted EBITDA were higher than ever before.” The company’s shareholders are set to share in this encouraging performance, with the dividend being raised to EUR 2.70 per share from EUR 2.50 in the previous year. Baumann is also confident that the company is on track for success in the future: “We are optimistic for 2017 – and beyond.” Learn more

World Malaria Day: Bayer partners with Goodbye Malaria to help “End Malaria for Good” Bayer announces the establishment of a partnership with Goodbye Malaria (GBM). Both organizations will jointly support the objectives of Ending Malaria for Good in Southern Africa. The figures published in the 2016 WHO malaria report, with malaria cases falling by 21 percent between 2010 and 2015 and malaria death rates falling by 29 percent over the same period, provide encouragement for more action to accelerate malaria elimination. In the last 15 years, vector-control has been responsible for preventing almost 80 percent of the total cases averted in Africa and vector-control is thus key to reaching the goals of malaria elimination. However, despite the success in recent years, it is widely agreed that the magnitude and global reach of the disease requires the ongoing engagement of all major stakeholders to work together to provide expertise, investment and innovation. Today is World Malaria Day, a chance to shine a spotlight on the global effort to control malaria and an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained commitment for malaria prevention and control. Endemic in 91 countries, malaria threatens the health and livelihoods of almost half the world’s population. In 2015, there were 212 million cases globally, resulting in 429,000 deaths, 92 percent of which occurred in Africa and primarily in children under 5 years old in Africa. Vector control, a field in which Bayer has been a leader for over 60 years, has played an enormous role in restricting the transmission of malaria. It is estimated that the implementation of malaria vector control interventions, such as insecticide treated nets and indoor residual spraying of houses, been responsible for preventing almost 80 percent of the total cases averted in Africa in the last 15 years.
