Founded in 1996 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 1999, InsideOUT Writers' long-term goal is to reduce recidivism among juvenile offenders by providing young people with tools for pro-social means of self-expression, self-reflection and positive inter-group communication.
Today, IOW offers two innovative programs for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youth and young adults. The Writing Program offers 39 weekly creative writing classes for youth incarcerated at four juvenile detention facilities and one adult facility in Los Angeles County. The Alumni Program provides a continuum of care for former Writing Program participants who have been released from detention.
