The efforts to establish a library in Herington began in 1897 when Drusilla Herington, daughter of the town's founder, organized the Women's Mutual Benefit Club. This organization raised funds and purchased the lots on which the current library stands.
A reading room was openned in 1910 by the Herington Library Association that patrons could use for $1 a year.
Andrew Carnagie was approached for funds to construct a Library and in 1913 he offered $10,000 for a building. The library, constructed of Ohio grey pressed brick, openned in 1915.
In 1967, the basement was remodeled into a meeting room with the help of a matching-fund grant from the State Library of Kansas. The basement now houses our childrens and youth collection as well a childrens reading area.
