#GetPT1st The American College of Physicians, released new guidelines this week in the treatment of low back pain. Some of the major changes include: 1. Non-drug treatments, such as physical therapy, as the first line of treatment. 2. Acetaminophens (such as Tylenol, Excedrin and some varieties of Sudafed) should not be used at all for back pain, since recent evidence shows that those over-the-counter painkillers do not actually help back pain. 3. That doctors prescribe opioids only as a last resort, after other drug and non-drug therapies did not work, If you suffer from low back pain our treatment method consisting of a combination of hands on manual therapy, exercise, and education can help you beat back pain. “Emily, I wanted to drop you a note letting you know how thrilled Mr. Louis Day was with your care. Thanks!” Dr. Allan Weber. This was the handwritten note Emily Fuertsch received from Dr. Weber for the exceptional hands-on therapy she provided Mr. Day. Mr Day was suffering from headaches for over 40 years and is now living a “happier life!” Read his story here: “For 40 plus years I suffered bad headaches. I never understood how muscles in my neck and shoulders can affect areas in my skull. Chiropractic care in the past years has helped a little. But I was not educated on why this is happening and how do we proactively work to get better and maintain a healthier lifestyle. This all changed for the better when I was referred to Apex. My Physical Therapist, Emily Fuertsch, PT, DPT not only helped me learn how to work and take care of these problem areas. She helped me realize me realize that it’s ok to take time to get healthy and be positive as we moved forward. I have recently battled not only bad headaches but also stress, anxiety and some depression. My treatment plan with Emily helped me also through some of these other issues. Her attention to detail with my issues and also being a very good listener as we worked forward to get me healthy again was very rewarding for my headaches and me living a happier life. Although my treatment is over, I will continue to work hard with the plan Emily has sent home with me. Thank you again Emily for all your help and support during my treatment!!” Lou Day Thank you for sharing such an inspirational story, Lou, and Thank you Dr. Weber for referring Lou. Experience the Difference! Excel and Apex Physical Therapy are different than other physical therapy practices in the Philadelphia region. We are different because of our low volume model. When we schedule 1- 2 patients an hour, we don’t need PT aides to help with treatment, only see licensed physical therapists. This “low volume” model allows our physical therapist to use hands-on, manual therapy techniques to the fullest extent, not cut back because of the number of patients they need to see. This emphasis coupled with individualized exercise programs gives our patients an optimal environment for improvement. We focus on the pain and address the cause to prevent movement problems. Our philosophy has been validated! In a recent study from the University of Eastern Finland looking at back pain, the Arthurs found that the best method to treat back pain is a combination of manual therapy and specific individualized exercises. This approach reduced the disability experienced by patients and significantly improved their functional ability and allowed a return to pain free functional activities!
