Each of our items are hand painted, creating a one of a kind product for your customer. The items are crafted and painted in Peru by artisans in cottage industries who proudly continue to work in the Old World technique of Reverse Painting on Glass. The process requires the design to be meticulously painted in the reverse on the glass, then placed paint-side down onto the frame. The result is a work of art to be cherished for the life of the product.

Reverse Painting on Glass (eglomise) is a very old art form dating back to 14th Century Rome. Towards the end of the Renaissance, the Italians adopted the technique for use with water based paints and subsequently the art form grew in popularity across the rest of Europe. When the Spaniards settled in Peru during the 1500’s, they brought many of their household items from Spain, among which were Reverse Painting on Glass Mirrors. Initially, the settlers imported their home furnishings and goods from Spain, but in time, a core of Peruvian artisans and craftsman began to locally create and fabricate these products. Reverse Painting on Glass techniques became ingrained in the art and craft movement of Peru, becoming a well-defined part of the vernacular of everyday products and household goods.

With the advent of the computer age, fewer and fewer Peruvian youth are aspiring to the career of artisan. Hence, many Old World techniques, such as Reverse Painting on Glass are no longer being produced. The items offered for sale by Robert M. Weiss
Presents represent a glorious and proud heritage dating back to earlier times.
