FORD & CHRISTINE MITCHELL ESTATE 2003 53RD STREET LUBBOCK, TX 79412 STARTS MARCH 1ST 2017 WEDNESDAY 9AM - 5PM THURSDAY 9AM - 5PM FRIDAY 9AM - 5PM SATURDAY 9AM - 5PM DISCOUNT DAY!! SUNDAY 1:00PM - 5:00PM FINAL CLEARANCE!! See all pictures on our website: Antiquemalloflubbock.com The collection of Milford G. (Ford) Mitchell represents the passion of Ford and Christine Mitchell for collecting books, maps, manuscripts, art, and artifacts over a period of forty+ years. Ford was born June 2, 1921 near Waco, TX. Childhood was a cherished memory for Ford, and the stories he passed on about his childhood often centered on the joys of roaming and exploring the fields and woods and adventures with his friends. On these adventures he found Indian arrowheads that perhaps sparked his interest in history. Though books were not readily available on rural Texas during the Depression, he developed an insatiable interest in reading. During that period a teacher began lending him books. He was grateful, but he looked forward to possessing books of his own. Ford attended UT prior to entering military service in 1942. In 1943 he married Christine Carr, and spent the remainder of the War with the Armed Services Radio Service. After the War, he served a stint as Pres. of the AP in Texas. In 1957, the couple moved to Lubbock, where for 16 years Ford was the news anchor for KCBD and hosted a midday talk show with local and national celebrities. When he left television, Ford became public relations officer at Briercroft which had its offices on 50th and Q in a building (no longer standing) modeled after George Washington's home at Mt. Vernon. He took the initiative to combine his sense of history to acquire for the bank a sizeable collection of Washington memorabilia and other items which were on display for the public. Though he had a wide range of interests, Ford's main focus for collecting was Texana and the West. He loved finding a rare or scarce item, and a keen appreciation for preserving history. When Ford purchased an item for his collection, it wasn't just to add to the total. He would begin to research it and try to find connections with other historical events or other books. The results of his research would be recorded on written memos or small index cards which he kept next to his favorite chair. Each item from this collection has a special story; each was treasured and enjoyed by him, kept in a kind of special trust. Now the collection will be dispersed. It is hoped that others will find enjoyment from this great collection.
