Abiding Savior Lutheran Church shared A Hat For Harold's post.
Several years ago the founder came to Abiding Savior to share about this small, but innovative and impactful, organization.
"Where does the money come from?" Delphine asked me at last week's meeting. We had a few minutes before the council meeting was set to start so we were just chatting. When the newer clients discovered that I was the founder of A Hat for Harold visiting that day they started asking questions. "It just comes from people," I said. "People are donating to try to help. We have a woman who is ninety-five years old and donates $25 every month. We have another woman who donates $5 every few months as she can." The group seemed quite humbled that real people--who don't necessarily have large budgets themselves--were trying to help them out. Many times, recipients of assistance have no idea where the money comes from and just assume a local, state, or federal program is providing the funds; it's just a "black hole" to them. We are not a government program; we are just a group of people trying to make a difference in fellow human beings' lives. The meeting started and two grants were authorized; one for cell phone minutes and one for propane to help keep the tent warm and be able to cook. I noticed that during the conversation ahead of the meeting and throughout the voting process, a new client was standing in the corner and just stayed quiet, observing the process. After the meeting was over, she looked at me and said, "It's nice to know there are people out there that care. Life can be tough." "There are," I said. "There are people that care." I went over and introduced myself and asked her name. "Hope." I embraced her and she just hung on for a very long time, needing that reassurance of compassion. It is for Hope and Delphine that we started A Hat for Harold. To provide that sense of hope that can stave off desperation. Thank you for being one of those people that care; for being a part of this community that is trying to make a difference. -Sherri

"In the face of anti-Semitism, we are called to speak out – as an expression of our love of neighbor and as our faithful response to the love of God in Jesus. In doing so, we become ambassadors of hope in the face of despair, imitators of Christ." — ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with more than 3.8 million members. "God's work. Our hands."

Has your congregation ever offered ashes to go? Leslie Scanlon, Pastor at Grace Lutheran in Chesapeake, VA shares her experiences of Ash Wednesday "where the people are." http://blogs.elca.org/worship/?p=332
Today’s post is by Leslie Scanlon, Pastor at Grace Lutheran in Chesapeake, VA. It was a cold winter morning (normal by New England standards), there were a couple inches of snow piled up on the side of the streets and sidewalks, and I was lugging a little table, a plastic box of supplies, and a si...

Holy God of compassion, you invite us into your way of forgiveness and peace. Lead us to love our enemies, and transform our words and deeds to be like his through whom we pray, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
