Backpack Safety Is your child wearing their backpack correctly? Here are some helpful tips. Never wear a backpack across one shoulder. Backpacks should have wide, padded shoulder straps and fit snuggly between both shoulder blades. The backpack should never hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking. The heaviest contents should be placed closest to the back. The weight of the backpack should not be more than 5% to 10% of the body weight. Secure waist strap for an even weight distribution. Wearing a backpack incorrectly promotes poor posture, and may lead to chronic back pain, joint and spinal degeneration. Not sure if your child is wearing their backpack correctly? Visit your chiropractor for an analysis. #Chiropractic, #Chiropractor, #backpack, #posture Dr. Shelly A. Severns, DC Severns Family Chiropractic (618) 624-3600
