The land now occupied by Breckenridge originally was the hunting grounds of the Dakota Sioux and Oijbwa (Chippewa) Indian Nations. In 1857 an expedition of 10 men came to this area because the site was shown to have the only river in the area that began here and glowed through the entire territory. The river, known as the Red River of the North, begins in Breckenridge and is the longest north-flowing river in the United States.
The town was named for John C. Breckinridge, Vice President of the United States. The “i” in his name became an “e” for an unknown reason. On the original plat however, it is spelled correctly with the “i”.
Breckenridge area is known for being located in some of the world’s most fertile growing areas- the Red River Valley. While here you will see farm land stretching for miles along the lake bed of the former Lake Agassiz.
