Imagine a life without literacy skills. Street signs, a menu, and the mail are impossible to read. Speaking clearly to co-workers or understanding telephone conversations is difficult. Writing checks, an e-mail or a note to a child's teacher is overwhelming. Everyday life is filled with fear and isolation. This is the case for many of LVSC’s students: nearly 95% are immigrants who cannot read, write or communicate in English and the other 5% are English-speaking adults who struggle to read and write.

Adults with low literacy skills are often unable to find work, advance in their careers, or are underemployed. They are often less likely to be involved in their children’s education and more likely to struggle financially. Through LVSC's free programs, students work with trained volunteer tutors to improve their everyday literacy comprehension. With newly obtained literacy skills, LVSC’s clients become more productive employees, involved parents, better-informed consumers, and engaged citizens. The community becomes richer and stronger. We all benefit!
