Inspired by a letter she received from Georgia O’Keefe, Yayoi Kusama moved to New York City in 1957 to pursue a career as an artist. She came to the Art Students League and studied with us for a year. Over the following decades she staged elaborate happenings throughout New York City, at one point breaking into the garden of MoMA The Museum of Modern Art to perform a happening with several naked assistants. She exhibited her work with Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and other prominent avant-garde artists throughout the 1960s, before returning to Japan in the early 1970s and living in a mental hospital, where she wrote surreal short stories and poems. After representing Japan at La Biennale di Venezia in 1993, Kusama’s work received newly heightened recognition from the international art world. In recent years she has created large public sculptures on commission, and has made several films and documentaries, the most recent released in 2008. The same year, Kusama became the best-selling living female artist, with works breaking record prices at auction. She currently lives and works in Tokyo. 🎈🎊Happy Birthday to this League Artist! 🎊🎈

Many painting problems actually come from the preparatory drawing. Luckily, artist Yuka Imata is teaching a 2-day workshop on how to set yourself up for painting success beginning on April 1: https://www.theartstudentsleague.org/workshop/understanding-process-beginner/ On the first day students will learn to simplify the subject of the painting into light and shadow shapes, learn how to measure, then translate it all onto paper. Once the exercises are reviewed, Yuka will explain the essential oil painting materials to start a painting. On the second day, a step-by-step approach will be introduced to oil painting starting with a demonstration by the instructor, then the students will work from the model and lay out the paint. This workshop will provide the skills and confidence to start a painting before you dive into a monthly class. Yuka studied with Ronald Sherr here at the League in the early 2000s. Since then her works have been on the cover of Drawing Magazine, appeared in Plein Air Magazine, and have been featured on a special on ESPN about athletes. Does anyone recognize the lady in the portraits? ;)
