Canine Influenza. You have heard it on the news, among your friends and now we are here to inform you that two strains are in California. H3N2 and H3N8 We have not seen them here at our office or in our immediate area. Both are contagious to dogs. Although cats are less likely to get this strain, there have been positive testing for H3N2 in cats. The newest strain H3N2 has proven to be fast and furious. It is highly contagious and can be spread from dog to dog, airborne and even on play toys, water bowls and humans. It can last in the air and on articles of clothing for 2-3 hours before transmission. If your pet is sick please contact our office so we can get started on testing, care and treatment right away. The canine vaccine is on its way to our hospital. We expect it here mid week and will alert all of you. It is a two part vaccine. One initial dose with a follow up 3weeks later. Then yearly after the initial and second dose. We will be taking extra vaccine appointments for those who need to get this vaccine on board fast. There is no vaccine for cats currently. The map below is a current 2017 virus spread tracker from a reputable website put together by one of our pharmaceutical companies, Merck. Please call our office next week for more details during office hours Monday-Friday 8:30-5:30 707)542-7387
