Hershey's Ice Cream

35
It all started in 1894 in a small Lancaster farmhouse in Pennsylvania, where the Hershey brothers – Jacob, Isaac, Paris, Ephraim, and Eli – were making the best ice cream available anywhere. It did not take long for that farmhouse in Lancaster to get fairly crowded with all of that ice cream making paraphernalia.

Harrisburg seemed a logical place to open a “real” manufacturing facility – it was centrally located, making the monumental job of delivering a perishable dessert just a little bit easier. In 1926, the brothers constructed a large ice cream plant in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It was built at the same site where today’s modern plant, main offices and support services continue to operate.

In those early days, the ice cream was packed in metal-lined wooden containers, originally built by the Hershey brothers. The “route salesmen” packed ice around the containers to guarantee the freshness and quality of the ice cream and hit the road in horse drawn wagons. The Great Depression saw the birth of a new era; Hershey’s became the first ice cream manufacturer to offer pre-packaged pints of ice cream. Those “carry out” pints and half
gallons started a whole new tradition in the lives of all Americans.

The days following World War II moved fast. People were on the run; convenience and ease became household words. Hershey’s was on top of the
situation with “on-a-stick” desserts. With stick bars, ice cream sandwiches, and Ski-Hi’s, the novelty business was born, and bound for success. America’s love affair with ice cream was growing, and so was Hershey’s!

In the 1950’s, George Holder, the President of the company, made a strategic move to grow Hershey’s even more! Up until that time, two primary dairies – Hershey Creamery Company and Meyer’s Dairy – operated out of Central Pennsylvania. George consolidated the two companies and put them both under the name “Hershey Creamery Company”.

The company continued to grow to where it is today; now selling premium products to tens of thousands of accounts in 25 states.
