Woodley House was established in 1958 as the first psychiatric halfway house in the District (and the 8th in the nation). Its founder, Joan Doniger, believed "people who don't want to be hospitalized should have choices." She knew that with affordable housing, compassionate care, and basic support systems, people could work at their own pace towards real recovery.
