Situational Awareness is the key!!! Auburn City Schools has that Key!!! Auburn City Schools Way to go Dr. DeLano!!!
OFFICIAL STATEMENT: Enhanced student performance, reduced energy costs and passive security are the primary reasons for the considerable amount of glass used in the new Auburn High School’s design. “The outpouring of enthusiasm surrounding the new high school speaks volumes for our community,” said Dr. Karen DeLano, ACS Superintendent. “In taking all feedback into consideration, the expansive use of glass is a recurring topic of discussion since our open house on May 31.” Multiple studies have been done comparing student performance in classrooms with and without natural light. Student performance is much higher in classrooms with natural light with studies showing scores in Math and Reading improving by up to 25 percent. This natural light also reduces the need for artificial light. Artificial lighting can account for a third of all energy usage in schools, according to DeLano. School safety and security measures generally fall into two basic planning strategies: active and passive. Active approaches focus on symptoms of security issues and passive approaches attempt to alleviate their causes. “Transparency provided by large expansive glass provide what is considered passive security,” DeLano said. “Our school design incorporates the design principle of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design).” Transparency provided by the glass allows for unobstructed sightlines to building entrances, school yards, parking lots and interior common spaces. This aspect of the campus offers surveillance to outside threats. “It allows teachers to supervise student in and out of the classroom as well decreasing the opportunity for behavioral issues,” DeLano said. “No adult is ever in a space with a student that isn’t visible to others.” During construction, the school system worked closely with Auburn Police Department planning security practices for student and staff. Based on their input ACS will be adding additional School Resource Officers on the high school campus. The facility design also includes extensive video surveillance monitoring throughout the campus with an emphasis placed on a limited number of access points. #ACS #Auburn #CelebrateAuburn #1701EastSamfordAvenue #Community #AuburnHighSchool #ALSDE #CityOfAuburnAL
