The Midland YMCA began in 1953 with 1,162 charter members. A temporary board with George Bush as Chairman set out to raise the funds needed to start the organization. In September 1953, the first elected Board was installed with Curt Inman serving as chairman. These Midlanders were committed to providing adequate recreational and social facilities for the families who had been brought here to work in various phases of the oil industry. Programs began with a bicycle club for boys and girls and a men's volleyball class that met in the school gym.
