Orville Chenoweth’s years of racing started at the State Fair when his cousin, Marvin Chenoweth let him on his pit crew and was hooked to the sport. Orville’s father ran the concessions at Valley Speedway until it was demolished by a tornado. He began building racecars in the early 70’s, helping drivers such as Wayne Diede, Ron Muth, Leon Moser, Denny Selting, Roger Saathoff, Mel Wagner, John Grace and Mike Smith.
Orville tried his hand at his own business in 1975. Westside Welding was his first enterprise, and later he expanded with West-Way Trailers.
Chenoweth spent long days running his welding repair shop in a Quonset building on Old Highway 14 while also spending 16 years working nights at Armour & Company. With his shop space seeming to grow smaller and smaller and his workload increasing, he moved into the current West-Way Trailers building.
West-Way Trailers was the regional dealer for Wells Cargo and began selling trailer supplies such as hitches and tow bars as well as building custom trailers of their own. Orville welded cars together for Granny’s Performance and installed roll cages for drivers. Chenoweth became known among racing buffs for his work in the competition area.
In 1996, Chenoweth entered the world of track promoting, by founding Dakota Promotions, Inc. and becoming the Promoter of the Dakota State Fair Speedway at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds and has been in the business for nearly 20 years. Orville has also spent many years helping his son, Chad Chenoweth, build cars and work on them.
West-Way Trailers is an authorized dealer of Wells Cargo, Diamond C, Triton, Alum-Line and Rice and also sells many trailer and RV parts and services.
