It is our belief that the physical environment of the classroom has a profound effect on the individual child, as well as the group as a whole. Consider the classroom space as a third teacher. The space should be organized for particular learning possibilities by its placement, design, and content. A physical setting that is safe, attractive, and comfortable helps children engage in the daily classroom activities and ultimately learn. Such an environment supports the goals we have for the children.
The classroom centers ( technology, art, library, dramatic play, blocks) supply the children with different experiences such as making decisions, making use of their individual learning styles, working at their own pace, and developing creativity and expression.
We follow an emergent curriculum, which is an investigation of real topics that encompasses the children's world. In the emergent curriculum, it is the job of the teacher to see to it that her lesson plans contain genuine knowledge and the content areas needed to further the children's learning. A large part of the curriculum is "studies" which are in-depth investigations that focus on finding answers to questions about a topic of interest to the children. Learning about subject areas in the context of a study or an investigation can make learning more meaningful and, therefore, help children better remember and use what they have learned.
The curriculum incorporates learning, academics, and early childhood standards (according to state guidelines) into play with purpose and intent. The play is not random because teachers have carefully planned the content areas ( math, science, literacy, social studies) directly into how the children play in the classroom. Therefore, the children's play becomes more positive and more interesting to the children, and more ready for learning opportunities.
The Les Enfants staff has years of experience in the education of young children. Our staff uses a variety of approaches to take an active role in the children's learning. We are a staff that really likes and values one another and that attitude is passed on to the children. We have very little turnover of staff members. Some of our staff has been here as long as 15 years!! We consider ourselves not only co workers; we consider each other family. We strive to bring a positive climate throughout the school that is reflective and respectful of the children.
