Angels Gate Cultural Center The Gate Gallery

HISTORY:
Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s, who created artists’ studios and exhibition space within the 1940-era Army barracks of Angels Gate Park. These artists’ spaces were used by a variety of professional artists, and offered art and cultural classes and art exhibits for the community.
It became an artists’ hub that was well regarded for high quality art and culture. Over the last 28 years, AGCC has expanded from a local artists’ district into a renowned cultural center providing high-quality exhibits, interactive classes, engaging events and educational programs.

In 1977, San Pedro’s Angels Gate Park became a facility of the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Recreation and Parks, with the requirement that a cultural center be developed for the community. In 1982, the group of local artists expanded their endeavors as an artists’ community and Angels Gate Cultural Center was granted non-profit status and a contract with the City of Los Angeles. These artists included ceramists, painters, sculptors, writers, musicians, photographers, printmakers, jewelers and film makers. The gallery space exhibits year round with 15 exhibitions in total. In 2005, Angels Gate Cultural Center successfully negotiated a 30-year lease with the Department of Recreation and Parks.
