For more than 50 years, East Harlem Tutorial Program has provided a safe, supportive learning environment for youth living in East Harlem. What began in 1958 as an intimate children’s reading group hosted by community member Helen Webber in her living room, has grown into a multi-site after-school agency that is recognized as a leader in youth development.

EHTP staff and some 200 volunteers serve approximately 500 participants in full-week extended-year after-school programs, family initiatives, and social services.

The youth served are ages 5-19 (grades K-12) and take part in comprehensive academic and social enhancing activities, including reading, math, science, one-to-one tutoring, and arts and culture courses. EHTP’s programs take place during both the school calendar year and summer. In addition to youth-based programs, EHTP also offers a variety of social and family services, including Family Literacy classes and counseling.

Together these programs provide a solid foundation for youth, families, and the community to succeed. EHTP’s primary goals are to advance social and academic development of neighborhood youth and to provide them with the necessary tools and encouragement throughout their educational careers to ultimately graduate from college and become well-rounded, productive adults.
