Have You Really Obeyed God? There is an old illustration that goes as follows: A father sent his son to build a barn, a house, and to dig a well on land which he had purchased. Upon his arrival the son exclaimed, “Father has made an excellent choice for the house site.” So he built the home according to his father’s instructions. Next he surveyed the spot his father had chosen for the location of the barn. “This too is an excellent spot for the barn,” the son thought to himself. So he built the structure according to his father’s instructions. After completing the house and the barn the son turned to the task of digging the well. He located the spot his father had chosen and said, “Father has not picked the best place for the well. It should be closer to the house.” So he dug the well where he thought best. In how many areas was the son obedient to his father; two; two and a half? The correct answer is NONE! The son chose to build the house and barn according to his father’s instructions because he agreed with his father’s choices. Obedience requires submission of our will. Many are like this when it comes to our heavenly Father’s instructions. Concerning salvation God has said that one must believe that Jesus is God’s son (Acts 10:43; John 3:16). To most people this makes sense, so they agree to believe in Jesus. God also says a person must repent of their sins – practice godly behavior based upon a change of heart (Acts 17:30). This too makes sense to many people, so they agree to repent. God’s instructions concerning salvation also includes publicly confessing faith in Jesus as God’s son (Rom. 10:10; Acts 8:37). Many see this as reasonable so they gladly oblige. However, God also plainly instructs that in order for a person to be saved, they must be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins (Acts 2:38; Mk. 16:16; 1 Pet 3:21). Although God’s instructions are clear concerning how a person becomes part of His family, many disagree with the command to be baptized. They are certain that God must not mean what he plainly states. It does not make sense to them. Therefore they refuse to be baptized for the purpose of having their sins washed away (Acts 22:16). In how many areas has God been obeyed by those who choose to believe in Jesus as God’s son, repent of their sins, and confess the name of Jesus publicly, but refuse to be baptized? None! They only acted upon the instructions from God with which they agreed. Just as the son in the story, their actions are not based upon our Father’s will, but rather, their own will. Obedience requires following all of God's instructions, motivated by love (John 14:15) simply because God said to do it. Matthew 7:21 should be of great interest to all who truly desire to obey God; “Not everyone that says unto me Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven. But he that does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Have you truly obeyed God? Tim Kidwell – Branson church of Christ Home of the Show Me State Bible Lectureship May 27 – June 3, 2018

Secret to a Happy Marriage. After nearly 38 years of marriage to the same woman I have learned the secret to the success of a happy marriage. It can be expressed in three words. But this information is only advantageous to those who are spiritually grounded and are striving to obey the instructions as given in God's marriage manual (no secret). The answer: Love God more! 1. Love God more than yourself. 2. Love God more than your spouse. 3. Love God ...more than anything and/or anybody. If two people are dedicated to loving God they will keep His commandments. Then, no matter the obstacle, struggle, trial or temptation they may face in their marriage, they will remain in love with each other. They will remain faithful to each other because their main goal in life is to remain faithful to God. I have been blessed to share my life with a woman who loves God more than me. And for that I am thankful. She is a reminder to me that I must love God more! Tim Kidwell - Branson church of Christ Home of the 2018 Show Me State Bible Lectureship May 27 - June 3, 2018
