Interactions among first responders and autistic individuals has been an ongoing and growing concern among parents and autistic individuals. The Autism Society of America is a leader in training first responders on understanding autism, learning about common behaviors of autistic individuals and learning proper and effective ways to interact with autistic individuals. But more must be done. Ask the chief of police of your local police department if his or her officers are properly trained in interacting with individuals with autism. If they aren't, encourage police training. If they are, say thank you.
A 14-year-old Arizona boy’s terrifying experience underscores that officers should be trained on how to recognize people on the spectrum.
