Tofu Shop Specialty Foods founder, Matthew Schmit, began making tofu in 1977 as part of a local food co-op in Telluride, CO. In 1980 he took his interest in sustainable food production to Arcata, California and established the Tofu Shop Deli & Grocery.
Inspired by descriptions of Japanese tofu shops, the Tofu Shop Deli made and wholesaled organic tofu out of the back door. Up front in the takeout deli, it offered a variety of fresh, artisan tofu-based burgers, sandwiches, salads and desserts.
The business transitioned to manufacture and wholesale only in 1992. Tofu Shop Specialty Foods began distributing its products in northern California. The Tofu Shop continues to develop our unique product line and market it to the greater California, Oregon and Southwest regions.
