Started the holiday weekend off right with a BHA Preschool family work day. I wish I had more snaps of ALL the lovely helping hands, but big thanks, everyone! We now have an expanded play area, beautiful garden storage, and the first stage of a sand digging area. Shabbat shalom!

Our spiritual lives are often over-verbalized and under-experienced. Join us for an experience of hiking, meditating, singing and praying in the majesty of the Hudson Valley. This is a very accessible trail walk that can be done by people with a wide range of strength and ability. There is a parallel program for children who are not ready for extended periods of silence, led by BHA member and teacher of environmental education Josh Kaplan. While there is no fee for participating in this hike, we do, of course, have expenses and we hope that you will choose to contribute to BHA so we can continue to be a home for vibrant Jewish life in the Hudson Valley. The details: When: We depart from the Little Stony Point Railroad Bridge at 10:00 AM (please plan on arriving before then). (map: https://goo.gl/maps/4dX8Y) What to Bring: Layers, water, snacks. If you have a small prayerbook that you are comfortable with and would like to bring it, feel free, but it’s not necessary.

Join us for a preview of the rough cut of the film, Praying With My Legs: The Spiritual Witness of Abraham Joshua Heschel. http://www.prayingwithmylegs.com/home.htm Following the film, we'll have a brief service marking the beginning of the festival of Shavuot and then have an opportunity to learn some of Heschel's teaching over dessert. Heschel was among the most widely respected Jewish thinkers of the 20th Century, author of God In Search of Man and The Prophets. Yet Heschel was compelled by his religious beliefs to leave the confines of his study to fight for human dignity -- immersing himself in the struggle for civil rights, the religious opposition to the war in Vietnam, and the dismantling of two thousand years of Catholic anti-Semitism at the Second Vatican Council. He understood his his religious obligation was “to humanize the sacred, and to sanctify the secular.” His call for reverence for the innate dignity of every human being and his warning against the dangers of religious fundamentalism are searingly relevant in our world of bitter partisanship and demonization of the other. Heschel’s is a voice of conscience for all time.
