Facing History & Ourselves

Facing History and Ourselves is a nonprofit international educational and professional development organization.

We equip teachers with strategies that help young people wrestle with current events and difficult issues through the lens of history. Using the lessons learned from pivotal moments in world history such as the Holocaust, or the American civil rights movement, teachers work closely with students to examine complex themes like identity, discrimination, and belonging. Youth are challenged to make connections between the past and their present. This safe space and rigorous curriculum enables students to lean into the discomfort, dig deep into their own beliefs and understand the impact of choices in their daily lives.

We believe that by empowering our youth, they will build a more engaged, moral, and compassionate society.

Our footprint is global. Facing History’s staff members work in Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Memphis, New England, New York, Toronto, London, and the San Francisco Bay Area. We have educational partnerships around the world, including China, France, Northern Ireland, and South Africa.
