Once again Hollywood officials show their appreciation for the employees and retirees. Today they voted to disregard a negotiated pension benefit for retirees. The supplemental distribution that was triggered in 2012 , yes 2012, when the pension earned 19.8 percent and the benefit is designed to share a portion(2%) with retirees. They also voted to sue the pension boards for the fire and police pension for giving their retirees the supplemental distribution when the benefit was triggered according to the actuaries assumptions. The pensions are funded largely with mandatory payroll deductions (7-9%)of your salaries and the money in the fund belongs to the retirees and participants. NOT THE CITY OF HOLLYWOOD'S ELITE. The actual fund is over 300 MILLION and growing. This is after years of pay cuts and reduced benefit packages for all employees. The so called budget shortfall in 2011 was around 38 million in the hole. Now after a complete recovery and a surplus of 37 million dollars in reserves( on the backs of the employees) they are still not willing to stand up on their end of the bargain. Many concessions have been made over the years to assist with helping out the City that has consistently been making poor fiscal decisions. Now some commissioners say the unions are unreasonable and demanding. Maybe someone is jealous that the employees earn more than her $25,000 a year. How can anyone be expected to negotiate contracts in good faith when contracts are negotiated and voted on by all parties, which one would assume that means also making sure they read what is in the contract and agrees to fund the agreement, and then when benefits become due the leadership would rather give millions to developers and special deals like RED LIGHT CAMERAS OR BUYING A HOMELESS SHELTER FOR 4 MILLION DOLLARS instead of paying what is due to the people that gave the majority of their lives to serve the citizens of this city. Not all the people on the commission are heartless. Only the same 4 people that have been in power long enough to be a huge part of the mess that has been created. Those same people that allowed the prior city manager to collect a life long pension from the supposedly underfunded General Employees Retirement Pension Fund after working only 2.4 years. And typical employee must work at least 5 or 7 years to be eligible for a pension if they were at least 55 or now 67. Once again the people that are driving the ship into the iceberg are rewarded and first to get the lifeboat to row to their next municipality to get another pension ( if you know what I mean)... Hopefully the residents remember these actions when election time comes around and not just listen to the false promises and rhetoric that the employees are required to endure. Hopefully with the new leadership from Miramar things will begin to shape up. We must not forget that we are public servants, from engineers to plumbers and building inspectors to operators and custodians, the City has brought us down to a level of wages that are roughly 20% lower than the surrounding municipalities. Lifeguards are leaving, they can't hire skilled mechanics, the people that treat the water and sewage can walk out and make 3-4 dollars an hour more in just about any city in the county, and about 100 employees are going to be retiring in the next year because the were forced into making decisions about retiring before all of the changes were imposed on the employees in the so called FINANCIAL URGENCY. All I can say is what comes around goes around... Hopefully the new development and property values will sustainably carry Hollywood during this transition. Maybe the infrastructure will hold up and people will begin to look at employees as assets and not unfunded liabilities. Time will tell...
