A local all-volunteer nonprofit ‘cooperating Association’ working with the State of California’s Department of Parks & Recreation, Anderson Marsh Interpretive Association (AMIA) is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the natural, cultural and historical resources found in Anderson Marsh State Historic Park.
AMIA plays an important role in funding projects that the state would otherwise be unable to provide and since 1984 has raised tens of thousands of dollars that have gone directly back into the Park. Projects have included conservatory work, construction, trail work, interpretive displays, rehabilitation of facilities and historic objects, purchasing interpretive items, acquiring furnishings and providing literature and other interpretive information.
AMIA also leads monthly guided Nature Walks and Ranch House Tours, provides docents for school and senior field trips to the Park and holds special interpretive events such as the annual “Old Fashioned Victorian Christmas at the Ranch.”
Due to California’s present financial crisis, Anderson Marsh State Historic Park was one of 70 State Parks put on a state “closure list,” and was scheduled to be closed July 1, 2012.
The Park was kept open while AMIA negotiated with the Parks Department to enter into a contact that will allow AMIA to operate the Park on partial basis. During this period, AMIA volunteers opened and closed the Park gates and AMIA paid for the Park utilities and other expenses.
In 2013, AMIA entered into a Partnership Agreement the the Parks Department which will keep the Park open through 2016. This was accomplished by AMIA agreeing to contribute the funding necessary to pay for the Park utilities, pay the salary of a Park Maintenance Aide and purchase tools and equipment necessary for Park maintenance.
The Partnership Agreement continues to be made possible by the generous contributions of AMIA's members and supporters.
