You never know what you"ll find when you start opening old boxes and going through tidbits of the past. Here's something that's likely been sitting in the same box since shortly after I opened my first store (Titan Comics, on Milwaukee Avenue) in 1983. It's one of Marvel's el-cheapo retail support items from the early days of the direct market: a Spider-Man window sticker announcing "Marvel Comics On Sale Here"! With help like this, how could any store fail?

Just returned from a New Year's vacation to Rome (where it was a balmy 60 degrees, not to rub it in). If there's one thing I've learned in my travels, it's that comics are everywhere! In Italy there are TV commercials touting reprints of Marvel's old Savage Sword of Conan magazine, enormous exhibits on Manga / Asian comics and DC heroes (in Lego form) at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and Palazzo Degli Esami, and newsstands all over the city display comics alongside magazines galore. Here are a few pics:

First, a reminder! The first Christmas Party in our new digs at 5251 N. Harlem is THIS Saturday from 12-5 pm. Lots of new comics in the bins and 25% off everything in house (except $1 comics). There will be food and drink, so please stop by to say hello. NOW, TO THE SERIOUS BUSINESS! Back in the far-flung days of 1976 (when I was negative 5 years old) I took my first of perhaps 20 subsequent trips to my home away from home, New York City. The occasion was Marvel Comics' 2nd Annual (and last) self-produced Comic Convention. In those days parents were a little less obsessed with the safety of their negative 5-year-old children, and I was allowed to travel unsupervised to NYC with a similarly young friend. NYC in the 70's was a big, glorious mess - punks and heroin were the dominant culture, and the city smelled more or less like it must have since around 1840. But, there was a comic book convention going on, and I was determined to be there. It was a raucus weekend, with a diversion to the City Center to catch Monty Python's historic live shows (serendipitous scheduling!) and lots of incredible sightseeing. Here for the first time anywhere, are a few pictures from those incredible days in 1976, featuring Stan Lee (with Captain Sticky - google him [I'm serious]), John Buscema (on stage sketching) and John Romita (dig that crazy shirt)! More to come!

Here's a small portion of the new group of $1 (and some $2)comics that will be going out on or around December 15th (just in time for our December 16th Christmas Party). This is all new stock, never in the bins before, with lots more coming over the next week. In all, I expect about 10 boxes of new, low-cost material to be set out. Gather up those lists!

On Saturday, December 16th Atlas will host the first Christmas Party in our new location! There will be food and drink, so I encourage everyone to come out between 12-5pm and take part. That day I will also be putting out a lot of new stock, including 8-10 new boxes of high grade comics from the 80's and 90's priced at $1 and $2. These will be collated and (hopefully) in numeric order, so bring your lists to search. Most of these books have been put away since they were released, so most look as if they were pulled off the rack yesterday. Everything else in the shop will be 25% off marked prices (except the bargain books and graphic novels already reduced)! Happy Holidays!
