But You Are Not Like Me In his simple but profound message today entitled "But You are not Like Me," Pastor Calvin spoke on the topic of diversity in the church and sees our getting together to worship as preparation for heaven. He cautioned against polarization segregation, and insularity and advocated that we venture into learning and sampling the cultural differences of our neighbors. If we fail to embrace the diversity around us, he implied, we are restricting ourselves from the educational, social and spiritual experiences that await our exploration. We must learn to venture outside the closed and familiar doors of our own settings and learn about those who are different from us. Jabez prayed for the expansion of his borders and it is my opinion that Pastor Calvin was asking us to be open to new, different and challenging opportunities. We must be willing to broaden the base of our culinary tastes or preferences, and rather than being mundane and predictable, change our routines by shaking things up. There is so much to see and learn, and so much room to grow, which bode well for our Christian walk and fellowshipping with others. "Variety," he reminded us "is the spice of life," which God welcomes because He, in His infinite wisdom, fashioned us differently and gifted us accordingly. Our pastor warned against criticizing others for the way they praise, pray, sing or lead, because the object of our worship is to please our Lord and Savior. The pastor expressed concerns that "we have made worship too much about style and not substance and we have reached a place when we now worship, worship." Pastor Calvin referenced the Book of Revelation, which teaches that every tongue and every tribe imaginable, will be in heaven worshiping and giving praise to God, so our purpose on earth must be intentional towards that goal.
