August 27 & 28 are International Bat Nights, so let's celebrate Hawaii's official State Land Mammal: 'Ō'pe'ape'a - Hawaiian Hoary Bat! The endangered ‘Ōpe‘ape‘a is the only native land mammal of Hawai'i. The Hoary Bat have been reported on all main islands with the largest population residing on Hawai'i. The Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus) was designated the official state land mammal of Hawaii in 2015. Just after sunset is the most common time to observe the 'δpe'ape'a. It appears to be a solitary bat that roosts in trees and feeds on insects. The name 'hoary' means ghost-like, and thus named due to the frosted tips of the 'δpe'ape'a fur. Much is unknown about this species but current monitoring in the Pu`uhonua park by USGS will hopefully provide more information.
