The National Book Award-winning novelist was perhaps best known for Jesus' Son, a book of interwoven stories focused on the lives of addicts. A spokesman for his publisher tells NPR he died Thursday.

Earlier this month, author Laura McBride visited Auntie's Bookstore for a reading of her new novel, 'ROUND MIDNIGHT. These are her words: "I'd like to thank Auntie's Bookstore for hosting me. You are all so very lucky to have this wonderful store. I lived in a town without an Indie bookstore for decades, and while I am pretty sure you are all well aware of the value of Auntie's, I'd like to make my pitch for this special place anyway. "You may not know that Auntie's is not paid to host events like this one. If their books cost a bit more than what you pay at Amazon or Barnes & Noble, it is because you are getting so much more for your money. You have this beautiful space in which to browse for books. You have booksellers such as Andrea and Melissa to recommend books to you: people who live in your community, and know you, and curate those books particularly for you. You have the opportunity to come to live events like this one. Tonight, you listen to a novelist; on another night, it might be a poet or an illustrator, a scientist or a philosopher. And finally, turn and look at the other people in this room. Auntie's provides a vibrant, thoughtful space in which you can interact with people in your community that you might otherwise never meet. "The way I see it, you've never paid less for a book than when you buy it at Auntie's Bookstore." Thank you for your kind words, Laura. 😍 We loved having you!
