The Ridge Trail Board has offered to match any additional year-end gift up to $16,000 - which would DOUBLE the value of your gift! We still need $3,200 to reach our goal and make it to the full match amount. Can you help? Your generosity will help us support the repairs needed to the trail that was ravaged by the North Bay fires and create a further impact in completing the 550-mile hiking loop around the Bay Area. https://ridgetrail.rallybound.org/yearend/Donate

The Ridge Trail provides 360 degrees of inspiration, here’s a story to inspire YOU to explore the trail that runs through your community. #Repost @thebackcountrycook (@get_repost) ・・・ I just spent 3 days on the RT (@bayarearidgetrail) in damn near my own backyard and it was pretty excellent. We hiked small, slow miles to accommodate my recently healed leg, which left lots of time to enjoy sweeping views of San Francisco and the coast. The trail was either well-maintained and easily-hikeable, or it was gnarly, exposed, brutally-steep fire road. Camping was either super kush (redwoods and campfires and hot showers at Samuel P. Taylor) or impossible (lots of private landholdings). It's a trail of many contrasts and unexpected things to see, and it felt like a real adventure. I've been thinking a lot about how to alleviate pressure on our most popular National Scenic Trails and backcountry Wilderness areas, while still enjoying my favorite pastime (walking around and looking at stuff). I know I can do both, and I'm planning some adventures for 2018 that will allow for long-distance hiking mixed with public service and cooking. The RT is an incomplete 550-mile loop encompassing the greater San Francisco Bay Area, and it offers exactly what I'm looking for: some primo walking around and looking at stuff in areas that feel wild, but don't require trampling through remote Wilderness areas. It'll be a logistical nightmare to try to thru-walk, but I'm researching my options and enjoying the prospect of hiking my own kind of hike according to my own kind of rules. Those rules include stopping at mid-day to cook elaborate hot lunches, and packing mostly fresh, local ingredients. Pictures and recipes to come! We ate so much good food!
