Shin Buddhism was founded in the 13th century by the Japanese priest Shinran Shonin. In the 17th century, his followers split into two schools, Nishi Hongwanji and Higashi Honganji; our temple belongs to the latter school. But more importantly, as a branch of East Asian Mahayana Buddhism, Shin Buddhism also traces its core teachings all the way back to the Buddha, who lived in the 5th century BCE.
