Throughout the summer of 1908, Nellie Frost, the first lady of Berea College, provided food and lodging in her home for some 300 college guests. Shortly thereafter, at her urging, the Boone Tavern Hotel and Restaurant of Berea College made its debut as a guest house for college visitors beginning in 1909. Today, the three-story, white-columned hotel is college-owned, and is operated by a hotel management company. The hotel's traditional furnishings are handcrafted by Berea College students, each of whom works in lieu of paing tuition and staff the hotel. After undergoing an $11 million renovation, Boone Tavern has re-opened its genial doors in March 2009 in celebration of the hotel's 100-year anniversary.
