With an enriched schedule of keynote speakers, panels and breakout sessions, this conference is designed for families as well as practitioners, direct service and education professionals. Prizant, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Adjunct Professor at Brown University Lindsey Biel, OTR/L, Award-winning Author and Pediatric Occupational Therapist YAI Westchester is delighted to announce it will present the inaugural “Life Changer” award to Marjorie Madfis, founder of @[714002202079284:274:Yes She Can]! The mission of Yes She Can is to develop transferable job skills for teen girls and young women with autism spectrum disorders to enable them to join the competitive workforce. Participants will be eligible for up to five Social Work Continuing Education credits upon completing these sessions. Attendees must be present for the entirety of the training in order to receive the CE hours awarded by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work. Young Adult Institute, Inc (YAI) SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0171. The Day's Itinerary Includes: 8:00am: Registration and Continental Breakfast 9:00am – 9:15am: Opening Remarks for Hon. Andrea Stewart-Cousins 9:15am - 12:15pm: Dr. Barry Prizant, “Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism” ASD is defined by a checklist of impairments, and this perspective leads to treatments that often focus on ridding a person of “autistic” symptoms. Instead of classifying behavior as deviant and pathological, this presentation will examine such patterns as part of human development and human behavior— a range of strategies to communicate and to cope with a world that feels confusing, overwhelming and frightening. Informed by published research, four decades of experience working with autistic people and their families, and first-person accounts, the experience of autistic people is addressed in a manner leading to a more respectful and developmentally appropriate approach. 12:15pm – 1:15pm: Lunch and Awards Presentation 1:15pm – 3:15pm: Lindsey Biel, “Sensory Smart™ Strategies for Real-Life Challenges” This presentation will help attendees understand sensory processing challenges and how they impact daily function.
