Show a little love - strengthen the safety net for seniors and adults with disabilities!! Monday June 19 @10:00am!! Board of Supervisors Budget Hearing!
Summer of Love – 50 Years Later… Join us for this year's budget hearing at City Hall. So as the City celebrates the first Summer of Love, we ask the City’s policymaker and budget wizards to remember those of us who helped make this City the diverse, inclusive, compassionate, creative City that is still is. We are thankful to the voters for establishing the Dignity Fund, but it is just a down payment on what is needed to help us grow old in community with our basic needs met. In 1967, we were teenagers and young adults. We believed that peace and love were the simple ingredients of a better world. We didn’t worry too much about the roof over our head or what we would have for dinner. We just wanted to be part of a community that was upbeat, hopeful, inclusive. Now we are 50 years older. And we are still hopeful, for the most part, but we worry a lot. The rents are so high and should we lose our housing, there would be nowhere in San Francisco for us to go. Many of us have Social Security, but the average payment is only $1,328 per month. Or we only have SSI or SSDI, which is so little it barely covers our housing. And if we have SSI, we cannot even get Cal-Fresh (food stamps). For health care, we have the security of Medicare but the amount we have to pay out of pocket has continued to increase faster than our income. And Medicare doesn’t cover long term care – for that, we need to be eligible for Medi-Cal or have a whole lot of money in the bank. Mark this Summer of Love Anniversary with a budget that more adequately helps by honoring these requests put forward by the Food Security Task Force, the Long Term Care Coordinating Council, the Budget Justice Coalition or other groups who care about seniors and adults with disabilities.
