Join us as we celebrate Michael Corcoran’s book All Over the Map: True Heroes of Texas Music! Corcoran's book profiles 42 music pioneers- from Ray Price to the Butthole Surfers- came out May 15 on University of North Texas Press. To celebrate, many of Austin’s finest musicians will pay homage to subjects in the book with a fast-moving show at The Continental Club on Juneteenth. The show will be preceeded by a 7 p.m. booksigning/ cocktail party at the Austin Motel, which sponsored the book’s design by Pentagram Austin. Those who purchase a signed hardcover copy of “All Over the Map” (320 pgs, $30) will receive a ticket to The Continental Club show across the street. Admission to the show otherwise is $10. Opening the show at 8:30 p.m. are Houston’s fabulous Jones Family Singers, who traditional gospel sound goes back to the Soul Stirrers of Trinity, Texas, who get the first chapter in All Over the Map. The Peterson Brothers, who play their regular Monday night gig at 6:30 p.m. will also be around for this night of blues, country, folk and rock n’ roll. June 19 marks the debut of Shawn y Ribs, Shawn Sahm’s collaboration with Shinyribs, doing his father Doug’s songs- and some of Freddy Fender’s, too. Other acts will be named later, after scheduled headlining shows have passed, but be assured this will be one of those “only-In-Austin” shows to remember. Michael Corcoran put out the original version of All Over the Map (UT Press) in 2005, while working at the Austin American Statesman. After 10 years of hardcore music history research, during which time he wrote extensive liner notes on 1920’s Texas gospel greats Arizona Dranes, Blind Willie Johnson and Washington Phillips, Corcoran decided to comepletely overhaul the first edition. He also added 18 chapters, featuring such artists as Barbara Lynn, Nick Curran, Lefty Frizzell and King Curtis, plus a section honoring six behind-the-scenes heroes (Burton Wilson, Evelyn Johnson, Clifford Antone, Chet Flippo, C-Boy Parks, Brent Grulke).
