Once thought to be extinct, the black-footed ferret is making quite the comeback. North America’s only native ferret species, while still listed as endangered, has gone from a population of 18 to approximately 300 in the wild with another 300 in captive breeding programs! Black-footed ferrets are extremely specialized predators, preying almost exclusively on prairie dogs and also using old prairie dog burrows for their dens. They are nocturnal creatures, spending up to 21hrs a day sleeping and emerging at night to hunt. © #badlandsnps #findyourpark #nps101 #wildlifebiology #blackfootedferret #BFF #endangeredspecies #endangeredspeciesday
