California Department of Consumer Affairs shared The Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists's post.
Throwback Thursday National Engineers Week is observed the week in February which encompasses George Washington's actual birthday, February 22. The purpose of National Engineers Week is to call attention to the contributions to society that engineers make. It is also a time for engineers to emphasize the importance of learning math, science, and technical skills. The celebration of National Engineers Week was started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers in conjunction with President George Washington's birthday. President Washington is considered as the nation's first engineer, notably for his survey work. George Washington surveyed over 200 tracts of land in his lifetime. He started at age 17 as the Culpeper County, VA official county surveyor and Surveyor General for Virginia. Most of his surveys were in the northern neck of Virginia. He also surveyed the property where Natural Bridge stands. If you go there you can see his initials that it is believed he carved as a teenager while surveying there. Thomas Jefferson was also a Surveyor General for Virginia and he was the county surveyor for Albemarle County. Abraham Lincoln was a surveyor in Illinois. We mean no disrespect to the 'other face' on Mount Rushmore, former President of the US Theodore Roosevelt, who is recognized as an author, explorer, soldier, and naturalist.
