Horizon is proud to have been the co-developer and general constructor in the restoration and repurposing of The Historic Eagle Mill. The former paper mill is situated on the banks of the Fox River in the heart of Downtown Kaukauna. We were happy to hear that the Library's move to this historic building has been great for the library and the community of Kaukauna! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Has the Move Been Worth It? - Update from Library Director Tony Wieczorek! People use libraries for a variety of reasons, sometimes least of which is to check out a book. People come to browse the collection, to be sure. But people also visit libraries to use technology, or in search of a quiet place to read or study or work, or to find a place to hold or attend meetings. So given the fact that the Carnegie Library had been such a fixture in the community for well over 100 years made us apprehensive about whether the community would embrace our new location and whether the community would actually use the amenities our new location offered. And people are in fact using the Library much differently than at our previous location. In the Carnegie Building, we had no meeting rooms, no study rooms, and with only four study tables very limited places for patrons to sit and read or spread out their work. With few outlets for people to plug in and charge their devices tripping hazards were common. • Our door count increased by some 6,000 more people have visited the Library. • Not surprisingly, our circulation also increased 5% from 2015. • But even more edifying is the fact that our four study rooms have been used 529 times. • Our conference rooms used 390 times. • Computer usage increased 8% over last year, no doubt in part due to people not having to sit so tightly together. • Wireless usage increased by 41% indicating patrons have found the new space to be a more suitable place to use their personal devices for study and work. • Our programs have also seen an increase now that we have more and better space for them. Since opening we have had 11,715 juvenile program attendees and 858 adult program attendees, an increase from last year of 18% and 40% respectively. • The new Library location has even generated more virtual interest and usage. Access to our website links increased substantially. Hits on the “Contact Us” link increased by 77%, “Family Programs” by 121%, and “Hours” by 148%, with over 200 more “likes” on our Facebook page. • Perhaps most indicative of the community’s acceptance of the new facility is demonstrated by the 336% increase in volunteer hours put in at the Library. In short, the move to a better and more suitable location has not only increased our business but has brought new life to a cherished landmark and has given a new source of pride to the community. Madison, WI was a stopping point for a flock of pesky flamingos! From December 5th to 16th, Horizon’s corporate office was taken over! However, the flock was easily bribed with money donated to Angel’s Wish and Key to Happiness Rescue! In total, the flamingos managed to raise $1,065 from 32 employees. There was not a single staff member who did not get flocked or participate. Employees were sitting in meetings with their flamingo, giving the them names and carrying them around at all times. Though the flock has moved on, feathers can still be seen floating through the office! Angels’ Wish: Angel’s Wish is dedicated to reducing animal overpopulation, rehoming companion animals, and raising awareness of animal welfare issues in South Central Wisconsin. In 2015, they took in 582 cats and 4 dogs from nearly 20 different counties in Wisconsin (and a few from other states). In the last ten years, Angel’s Wish has helped over 5,000 animals find their new homes. Why are we called Angel’s Wish? Lois Lawrence, a founding member of Angel’s Wish, once rescued a kitten from a construction site. Weak with starvation, dehydration, and a severe upper respiratory infection, neither veterinary treatment nor Lois’ love and care could save the kitten from the effects of that hot June day. Angel died that night in Lois’ arms. We believe that Angel’s wish would have been that no other animal be subjected to pain, suffering, abandonment or neglect. Key to Happiness Rescue: Key to Happiness Rescue is an all-breed dog and animal rescue that specializes in rescuing abused, neglected or unwanted animals at high risk of euthanasia and providing temporary foster homes and necessary medical care until a permanent home can be found. KTHR is an all-volunteer-based rescue, with 501(c)3. status. KTHR strives to educate the public on the importance of spaying and neutering of animals to prevent pet overpopulation and prevent animal cruelty and suffering through education and activities to the public. KTHR is committed to finding each family and abandoned dog their perfect match and to make each rescue rewarding and permanent.
