Follow up to the message in a bottle recently found under the south stairs of the Capitol – Oklahoma Capitol Restoration Update: One of our Twitter followers, @beaurue, found entries in the OKC city directory for all of the names on our note. Joseph B. Fisher is listed as a fireman at the State Capitol and lived at 2407 N. Walnut. Ernest B. Carleton is listed as a fireman at the State Capitol and lived at 1325 NW 1st St. A. Fred Bishop is listed as a plumber at the State Capitol and lived at 1422 NE Park Pl. Thomas M. Rushing is listed as an electrician at the State Capitol and lived at 1221 NW 12th St. Furthermore, Jill Rushing Cook, shared this post earlier today and indicated her grandfather was Thomas Rushing. Another of our Twitter followers, @ZCFleetwood, did some research and found a 1949 Oklahoman article noting that Tom Rushing was elected to his 6th term as a business manager for the IBEW Electrical Workers Union 1141. In 1960, another article noted he received the U.S. Dept. of Labor's "Certificate for Meritorious Service." The same article cites him as the manager of the western Oklahoma chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Assn. If you know anything else about the names on our envelope, we'd love to hear from you!

One of our construction workers found this note scrawled on a Game and Fish Dept. envelope and rolled up in a bottle underneath the granite stairs leading to the south portico. Dated Sept. 21, 1933, they wanted to leave notice that they were working in the area. Almost 84 years later, we discovered it. If you recognize any of the names on the note, please reach out to us.
