Hongwanji Mission School is conveniently located in lush Nuuanu Valley, three minutes from downtown Honolulu. Our curriculum is accredited by Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and Western Association of Schools and Colleges. We have a student body of about 330 students from preschool through 8th grade where students receive individualized attention with teacher ratios of less than 18:1. Our preschool has been named “Best of the Best” in 2006, 2008 and 2009--- from the Honolulu Advertiser.
Our facilities are unique for an elementary and middle school with a computer center, gymnasium, swimming pool, library & cafeteria. We offer a variety of after school programs ranging from our Fort Gakuen Japanese Language School, to aikido, judo, clay, robotics & swimming. We participate in the local interscholastic league for volleyball and basketball where both girls and boys from grades 5 – 8 participate.
We were established in 1949, the first Buddhist school outside of Japan. Affiliated with the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, our mission (above) and philosophy are rooted in Buddhist teachings and values. There is high parent participation in school events in our school and we offer all of our children a values-based education.
